First and foremost, hypnosis is not some wild and crazy thing. Hypnosis is a natural part of of life -
Hypnosis is not mystical or strange.
Hypnosis is something we experience on a regular basis. For example, when driving, has your mind
wondered - not really focusing on the road - and then all of sudden you miss an exit? That's
called freeway hypnosis. It happens when your subconscious mind tends to take over from your
conscious mind.
Some people may call it being in a trance - that is partially true or others may simply say that
being under hypnosis is like being asleep - that's nowhere near the truth.
For a lot of years, people have been trying to define what hypnosis is. The truth is that there is no
clear-cut definition of hypnosis.
Suggestibility is the important aspect of what makes hypnosis - hypnosis. How suggestible a person
is to being hypnotized will determine whether or not deep hypnosis can occur. There are numerous
tests that determine a person's suggestibility. Once determination is made, then specific inductions
can be used to hypnotize that person - based on their suggestibility.
How Hypnosis is created
For a person to become suggestible - the hypnotist must be able to bypass their critical area
of the mind. The critical area is that area that separates the subconscious from the conscious.
It is thinking critically. This critical thinking, while good in a lot of aspects, can block
positive suggestions from entering and keep negative thoughts in the subconscious mind.
By overloading this critical area of the mind - it becomes disorganized - thereby allowing suggestions
to bypass it and into the subconscious.
Disorganizing the critical area of the mind can be done by many factors. As long as the subject
is open and willing, then hypnotic techniques can be used to bypass the critical area and allow
suggestions into the subconscious. Hypnotic techniques are used by both good practitioners and
by persons who are not so good.
If, for example, a person is down on themselves and is searching for something better - something that
may make them feel better about themselves - then they may be open and willing. The unscrupulous
person may take advantage - using hypnotic techniques to bypass that person's critical area - and allow
suggestions to be put in. Those suggestions may cause that person to follow whatever the unscrupulous
person may suggest.
Uses and types of Hypnosis
Cults are excellent at using hypnosis to persuade people to do their bidding. Hitler also was
excellent at using hypnotic techniques to persuade his followers. Look around you and you'll notice
other forms of hypnotic techniques being used.
Neuro-Linguistic-Programming (NLP) is another aspect of hypnosis that is showing excellent use
by both good practitioners and those not so good.
By the way, a subject does not have to have their eyes closed to be hypnotized. Nor does hypnosis
have to done in the traditional way to be effective. I've used hypnotic techniques on groups as well
as individuals without them even knowing it. Afterwards, I would explain that I did indeed use
hypnosis on them. This was in the form of hypnotic language as part of my seminars.
While this is only a small explanation about hypnosis - I hope you'll understand somewhat what
it can do and how it is being done. As I stated earlier, look around you and be open to the
different types of hypnosis.
